A ‘Perfect’ turning point for disability representation in film

Two weeks after its release, the Filipino film I’mPerfect continues to draw audiences across Metro Manila, prompting an expanded cinema run as word spreads about its message of inclusion and representation.

The 2025 Metro Manila Film Festival Best Picture winner stands out for its cast led by actors with Down syndrome, a first in Philippine cinema. Directed by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo and produced by Sylvia Sanchez-Atayde of Nathan Studios, the film tells a story of love, independence, and acceptance—one that resonates deeply with families of persons with disabilities.

For Lorna Ontoy, a mother to a 24-year-old child who is blind and has childlike cognitive development, the film reflects realities often overlooked by society.

“Bilang magulang, ramdam ko yung mensahe ng pelikula,” Ontoy said. “Minsan akala ng iba wala nang kakayahan ang mga anak namin, pero may damdamin sila at may pangarap din. Kailangan lang talaga nila ng mga taong gagabay at susuporta.”

The film’s impact has extended beyond audiences. Mamamayang Liberal Party-list Representative Leila de Lima praised I’mPerfect for challenging long-standing stigma surrounding persons with Down syndrome and for highlighting their capacity for independence. She also commended lead actors Krystel Go and Earl Amaba for performances that, she said, prove they can “stand on their own.”

National Council on Disability Affairs Executive Director Glenda Relova echoed these sentiments, calling I’mPerfect a powerful and timely film that challenges limiting views on disability.

“This is a mind-opener for every person and every family. We should not box people with disabilities into narrow perspectives,” Relova said.

As its cinema run continues, I’mPerfect is being embraced not only as an award-winning film but as a mirror of families whose stories are rarely told—opening conversations about acceptance, dignity, and equal opportunity for persons with disabilities.
