Cebu delivers world’s first methanol-powered Kamsarmax bulk carrier

The world’s first methanol-powered Kamsarmax bulk carrier has commenced its maiden voyage to East Asia following its successful delivery from a shipyard in Cebu, marking a technological breakthrough for the Philippine maritime industry.

The vessel, named M/V Brave Pioneer, was constructed by Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu) Inc. at the West Cebu Estate.

The 81,200-metric-ton dual-fuel carrier completed all quality and safety certifications before deployment, signaling the country’s ability to produce high-value vessels that meet stringent international environmental standards.

The ship is engineered to significantly reduce the environmental impact of commercial shipping. Compared to conventional vessels, it reduces carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 10 percent, nitrogen oxides by up to 80 percent and sulfur oxides by as much as 99 percent.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. formally named and revealed the vessel during a visit to the 540-hectare West Cebu Estate.

The president was joined by Philippine Economic Zone Authority director-general Tereso Panga, Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro, Aboitiz Group president and chief executive Sabin Aboitiz and Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu) Inc. president Yasuaki Seto.

The delivery represents the 381st vessel completed by Tsuneishi’s Philippine operations. Industry leaders noted that the project highlights the technical discipline of Filipino engineering and the country’s position as the fourth-largest shipbuilder in the world by gross tonnage.

Located in Balamban, the West Cebu Estate is a PEZA-registered zone known as the shipbuilding capital of the country. Managed by Aboitiz Economic Estates, the hub integrates power, logistics and infrastructure to support complex manufacturing.

Aboitiz said what started as a single project has evolved into a full ecosystem that creates jobs and strengthens local suppliers.

He said the partnership has transformed Balamban into a hub that enables the Philippines to compete on a global stage.

The government continues to focus on innovation-driven manufacturing to position the nation as a competitive location for export-oriented industries.

The M/V Brave Pioneer serves as a primary example of this industrial strategy, supporting global supply chains through lower-emission transport technology.
