Conglomerates eye Meralco RE auction

Four of the largest conglomerates in the Philippines are among 15 power generation companies seeking to supply Manila Electric Co. with 200 megawatts of baseload renewable energy.

The power units of Ayala Corp., San Miguel Corp., Aboitiz Power Corp. and First Gen Corp. expressed interest in the competitive selection process to help the utility comply with renewable portfolio standards. The 15 prospective bidders have offered a combined capacity of 725 megawatts for the contract.

Meralco Bids and Awards Committee for Power Supply Agreements chairman Lawrence Fernandez said the strong interest reflects confidence in the procurement process. He added that the company remains committed to transparency and regulatory compliance to deliver sustainable and least-cost electricity to customers.

The utility has scheduled a pre-bid conference for Jan. 15, 2026, while the deadline for bid submissions is set for Feb. 16, 2026. The resulting 4-year power supply agreement is intended to begin on Jan. 26, 2026, following approval from the Energy Regulatory Commission.

Meralco has contracted 1,536 megawatts of renewable capacity, which exceeds its initial target of 1,500 megawatts. The company expects renewable energy to account for 22 percent of its supply portfolio by 2030 as part of its long-term sustainability strategy.
