Cement makers plot decarbonization roadmap

The Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (CeMAP) is leading an industry-wide effort to create a decarbonization roadmap, guiding local cement producers in cutting their carbon emissions in line with global climate targets.

The roadmap is part of the industry’s proactive move to support the Philippines’ Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, which commits to curbing greenhouse gas emissions to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2050.

“We recognized that cement is one of the highest contributors to carbon emissions, so we did not wait for the government to tell us to act. All CeMAP members agreed to work together on a roadmap for decarbonization,” said CeMAP executive director Ray Baja over the weekend.

Being developed with the help of the European Cement Research Academy (ECRA), the plan will assess the current state of the Philippine cement industry and identify key measures to lower emissions across the entire value chain, from production to design and construction practices. The roadmap is expected to be completed by February 2026.

The project is funded by the Canadian government and supported by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) acting as a local partner.
