FFCCCII calls for reforms to revitalize PH tourism

The Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) led by its president Victor Lim, urges the Philippine government to promote resolute and comprehensive reforms in the tourism sector.

In a statement titled “Calls for Action and Reform: Revitalize the Philippines Tourism Industry,” Lim emphasized the Philippines’ unmatched natural beauty and rich resources.

However, he voiced concern that while neighboring ASEAN countries are quickly recovering in tourism, the Philippines is facing significant challenges.

He stressed the importance of implementing urgent economic measures to tackle the sluggish recovery of the tourism sector, which is falling behind other ASEAN economies.

Data cited in the statement revealed that in the first 11 months of 2025, the Philippines recorded only 5.24 million inbound international visitors, reflecting a decline of 2.2 percent from the previous year and a staggering 37 percent drop compared to 2019, prior to the pandemic.

Lim pointed out that the tourism industry is one of the most accessible growth engines for the Philippine economy, capable of directly providing job opportunities and supporting a significant number of small and micro enterprises.

He identified three major challenges hindering the development of the tourism industry.

Travel-related issues include congestion at entry points and logistical difficulties on domestic islands, which create uncertainty for travelers.

Competitive disadvantages arise from the Philippines’ visa system, which is less convenient compared to those of other ASEAN countries, leading international visitors to choose destinations with simpler immigration processes.

Additionally, while the Philippines boasts stunning landscapes, there is a need to integrate its rich cultural heritage, history, and world-class cuisine to offer a more comprehensive travel experience.

To address these challenges, the FFCCCII proposed a blueprint for tourism reform that includes implementing a competitive visa system within ASEAN, upgrading major airports and transportation infrastructure for inner islands, and positioning the “Philippine experience” as a primary product in international marketing strategies.
