Filipino fashion in local adaptation of ‘Doctor Foster’

The Filipino adaptation of hit BBC series Doctor Foster (titled The Broken Marriage Vow) will not only feature local stars but pieces from homegrown fashion brands and designers, too.

‘The Broken Marriage Vow’ director and costume design head Connie Macatuno styling Jodi Sta. Maria.

Connie Macatuno, the series’ director and costume design head, said Jodi Sta. Maria, Zanjoe Marudo, Sue Ramirez, Zaijian Jaranilla, and their co-stars would wear “entirely local” pieces made by Filipino designers and artisans.

The director revealed all designers approached agreed to be part of the show “without even knowing what the show was”.

“Matagal ko nang inisip na makagawa ng isang palabas kung saan gumagamit ng local designs from local designers. Una kong naisip agad, pagsama-samahin silang lahat. Most of the local designers will be there in showcasing their original work. It’s the thing that excited all of us,” said Macatuno in a video released by Dreamscape Entertainment on August 6.

Stylist and costume designer Jilla Sara shows the locally made pieces used in ‘The Broken Marriage Vow’.

According to Macatuno, she personally picked and matched the elements of the stars’ outfits, getting the most fun out of building the overall look of Dr. Jill Ilustre, Sta. Maria’s character.

“We want to showcase our clothes, our roots, our culture in a different way. We get to wear the barong, the pinya on a daily basis. We get to wear the weaves of different places here in the Philippines, and showcase original works of different designers that have global appeal,” she added.

Meanwhile, Jilla Sara, a costume designer for the series, said that by featuring Filipino-made creations in the series, their team hopes to show global audiences “what Filipinos can do”.
