The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines highlighted the country’s efforts to improve its compliance and solidarity to the global campaign against counterfeit and piracy.
It said the Philippines was cited in the US Trade Representative 2021 report for its successful implementation of the Anti-Camcording Law, which is considered as an example and best practice.
The US urged countries to adopt laws and enforcement practices designed to prevent unauthorized camcording, such as laws that were adopted in Canada, Japan and the Philippines, the report said.
IPOPHL deputy director-general Teodoro Pascua said the even Greenhills, a shipping mall in San Juan City famous for pirated DVD movies, was removed from the notorious watch list while Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam remained on the watch list.
“But under COVID, it is almost two years since the cinemas closed and not many theatre films is likely to be shown up to next year. Also, Netflix and streaming are viable replacement for movies,” he said.
The 301 Report, however, called out negatively on the Philippines as a source of counterfeit medicines, which was based on a report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
