Renowned jukebox singer and former actor Victor Wood has passed on after contracting COVID-19 virus. He was 75.
Wood was confined at New Era General Hospital in Quezon City where he was pronounced dead at 9:00 am on Friday. His demise was confirmed by his wife Nerissa who shared that his husband experienced a sudden drop in blood oxygen level on Thursday night.
The iconic singer was born on February 1, 1946, in Buhi, Camarines Sur to American soldier Kocky Wood and Filipino mother Rosario "Tiyang Saring" Nobleza.
Considered as one of the original stars of Pinoy Pop, Wood endeared his fans with his voice and charming good looks. He popularized the hits “Mr. Lonely,” “Release Me,” “Crying Time,” and “Where Is Your Heart.” His classic songs “I Went to Your Wedding,” “Fraulein,” “Eternally,” and “Carmelita” were also some fan favorites that earned him the moniker “Plaka King” and “Jukebox King.”
Before becoming a singer, Wood starred in some productions of Sampaguita Pictures. Superstar Nora Aunor and actress Djoanna Garcia were some of the notable names she shared the screen with as his leading lady. Most recently, he shared his talent in television hosting via a Sunday show that aired on Net25.
Outside the limelight, Wood was also a painter and an entrepreneur. He first ventured into politics in the ‘80s and ran for the Senate during the 2007 general elections but lost.
