Barbie Forteza tackles grey character in primetime anthology

Television star Barbie Forteza believes that it’s every actor’s job to go beyond his or her craft playing characters that challenge one’s abilities. She underscores the importance of not sticking to playing the same type of character over and over again.

“Even in real life, we have different responses to the things that confront us. We can’t just stay good or bad all the time. You’re being tested by many situations,” the 23-year-old actress said in a virtual press conference.

“I’d like to think that in all the characters I play, there’s no black and white, rather, I play real characters. Totoong tao na may kasamaan at kabutihan din,” she carried on alluding to the character she is tackling in the third installment of I Can See You season 2 entitled “The Lookout.”

The mini-series airs tonight right after First Yaya on GMA-7. It will run until April 23 on the station’s primetime block.

In “The Lookout,” Barbie plays Emma Castro, an all-around helper and a street smart who gets entangled in a mess out of desperation to provide for her unwell sister.

Barbie is joined in the mini-series by actor Paul Salas as Marius Penuliar, a mysterious man in crutches who crosses paths with Emma, and the versatile actor Christopher de Leon playing an equally vital role as Dr. Robert Penuliar, a prominent doctor and the patriarch of the Penuliar family who is a stickler for security.

"I always start with logic. I don't question the character. I agree with whatever she does, but I put my personality to it as to how I would react to certain situations. Basically, in all the characters I portray, it's a combination of the character and my truth. I also got a different feel of the character once I got all made up. The red highlights, red lipstick, and the outfits. These factors made me feel bolder and tougher and so that's what I've come up with as Emma,” Barbie said of her character.

“The Lookout’’ also highlights the outstanding portrayal of dramatic actor Adrian Alandy with Benjie Paras, Arthur Solinap, Marina Benipayo, Elijah Alejo, Luis Hontiveros, Ella Cristofani, and Jana Trias. Jules Katanyag is at the helm with associate director LA Madridejos.

“I’m glad that GMA is really brave in terms of producing shows such as this. This is a genre piece, at masasabi kong napakatapang,” the director told Manila Standard Entertainment.

“It’s a home invasion piece. The rich and poor theme is still there, it deals with family situations as well. I Can See You is all about how gadgets become intruders in our lives and this is how ‘The Lookout’ complements the drama anthology that has a different theme each week. In other words, gadgets as a millennial thing and drama are merged to come up with a groundbreaking story featured in I Can See You,” the director ended.
