COVID cases over 9,000 for 5th straight day; active cases now at 124,680

The Philippines logged on Tuesday 9,296 new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) — marking the fifth straight day when more than 9,000 new cases were reported and a day after hitting a record high 10,016 cases.

The tally brought the total cases to 741,181, the Department of Health (DOH) said, even as nine laboratories were not able to submit their data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System (CDRS) on time.

This also pushed the number of active cases in the country to 124,680, the highest recorded since the pandemic began last year. This is also 16.8 percent of the total.

Of the active cases, 96 percent are mild; 2.3 percent are asymptomatic; 0.6 percent are critical; 0.7 percent are severe; 0.39 percent are moderate.

The DOH also reported that 103 patients recently recovered, bringing the total recoveries to 603,310, which is 81.4 percent of the total.

The DOH also reported five new fatalities, bringing the death toll to 13,191, which is 1.78 percent of the total.

The DOH also reported that, nationwide, 59 percent of the total ICU bed capacity are utilized; 46 percent of the total isolation bed capacity are utilized; 45 percent of the total ward bed are utilized; and 39 percent of the total units of ventilators are utilized.

In Metro Manila, 76 percent of the total ICU bed capacity areutilized; 68 percent of the total isolation bed capacity are utilized; 59 percent of the total ward bed capacity are utilized; and 57 percent of the total units of ventilators are utilized.

Some nine duplicates were removed from the total case count. Of these, five are recoveries.

Moreover, one case that was previously tagged as a recovery was reclassified as a death after final validation.

Earlier, the DOH recommended a one-week extension of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) reimposed over Metro Manila and neighboring areas.

Metro Manila, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite and Laguna were put under the most stringent lockdown due to a fresh spike in infections.
