Romancing the melodrama

Ang Pinakamabang One Night Stand, Bahay Bata, Quick Change, Pamilya Ordinaryo, Last Fool Show, Lola Igna, and Fuccbois are some of the motion pictures directed by  Eduardo Roy Jr. who is fondly called in Philippine showbiz circle as Direk Edong.

The fortysomething film maverick’s film projects are usually described as bombastic, gritty, poignant, a slap to your face, jab to your gut kind of movies. Thus, many were surprised when he agreed to do the melodrama Ang Daigdig Ko’y Ikaw.

“My motto in choosing a project is always to do a material that I have not done yet. You know, it’s like being in a battle. Hindi lang basta sugod ng sugod. As a filmmaker, you must choose your battles in the cinematic universe,” Direk Edong starts.

Ang Daigdig Ko’y Ikaw’ lead stars Geoff Eigenmann and Ynna Asistio.

“A film or a TV drama is the director’s take to a story that is given to you. They keep on saying there is no such thing as an original story. But what makes it a unique viewers experience is the director’s take. His films are his takes on the pressing issues presented, for example, poverty, old age, daring and promiscuity, and love. What I love most about directing is you seem to be jumping off a cliff and you do not know if somebody will catch you. The greater the risk, the more challenged I am in presenting a creative manner to skin this piece of cinema that inspired my artistic juices,” he carries on.

Director Roy, without a doubt, is romancing the melodrama genre now in Net 25’s Ang Daigdig Ko’y Ikaw, the first romantic series produced by the Eagle Broadcasting Corporation.

“It is definitely an upgrade especially in terms of the location. We shot the whole melodrama at Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar which is a very cinematic location. I want to declare in terms of ambiance that it is ten times better and bigger than Vigan. And the place is an important element to the romance between Roman and Reina.”

Playing his leads are Geoff Eigenmann and Ynna Asistio.

“I am very happy that finally Ynna is given this break because she is a good actress. When you first see here, akala mo wala lang, there is something about her that grows on you,” Direk Edong says.

“With Geoff, with his numerous TV drama experiences, alam niya na ang proper blocking, marking. He knows how to find his light. And there was a scene na may actor’s cue kami supposedly, wala pa on cue, he was already in tears,” he adds.

Direk Edong affirms that his two main stars share great chemistry together and they were emotionally invested in laying their characters.

The cast includes Elizabeth Oropesa, Tanya Gomez, Richard Quan, Adrian AJ Muhlach, Anna Mabasa-Muhlach, Arielle Roces, Jiro Custodio, Shiela Marie Rodriguez, Paulyn Ann Poon, Manolo Silayan, Myrna Tinio, and Jellex David.

Ang Daigdig Ko’y Ikaw airs every Saturday, 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. with replays every Sunday at 5:30 on NET 25.
