Morrison raring to get back in shotput action

After a series of lockdowns in the United States kept Fil-Am bet William Morrison from competing in top level shotput tournaments, he is now ready to get back into action again.

The 23-year-old Morrison said he plans to join at least two tournaments towards the end of the year and hit the Olympic qualifying mark.

Morrison discussed his plans following talks last week with Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association president Philip Ella Juico.

“We have a bit of catching up to do mainly because of the pandemic and Willie’s school commitments, but we hope to make,” said Juico.

The 6’3” Morrison is currently in Kansas City, with his personal coach, Danny Capps.

The Olympic qualifiers will be held on December 1 this year and is set to end on June 29, 2021, with Morrison seeking to hit the standard distance of 21.10 m.

According to Morrision, Capps has been his coach since his high school when lighter shots were still used.

Morrison’s best mark is 20.40 or about .7 m or 2’4” short of the standard with nine months to go.

And he is presently ranked 65th in the world despite the absence of competitions.

Last February, the Indiana University-based Morrison achieved a distance of 20.21 meters in the shotput event of a National Collegiate Athletic Association meet in Indiana.
