World no. 2 chess player Nakamura to play in PH

WORLD No. 2 chess player Hikaru Nakamura is set to bring star power to Manila as he headlines the inaugural WR Bughouse Championship scheduled on June 1 and 2 at the Grand Hyatt Manila.

The American super grandmaster, widely regarded as one of the most dynamic players of his generation, confirmed his participation through his X (formerly Twitter) account, expressing excitement over competing in a fast-paced and unconventional format of chess.

Known for his speed and creativity, Nakamura is expected to thrive in bughouse, a variant that emphasizes teamwork and rapid decision-making.

Nakamura will team up with German chess patron and WR Chess founder Wadim Rosenstein, who is spearheading the event in partnership with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP). Their collaboration aims to introduce a fresh and entertaining dimension of chess to Filipino fans and the international community.

The two-day tournament boasts a hefty prize pool of $100,000 (around P6.1 million), with half awarded to the eventual champions. Organizers expect around 100 teams from across the globe, with a strong contingent of Filipino players eager to test themselves against elite competition.

Bughouse, also known as transfer chess, is played by teams of two, with each player controlling a board. What sets it apart is the rule that captured pieces are passed to a teammate and can be deployed strategically on their board. Each player is given five minutes with no increment, making for high-pressure, fast-paced encounters.

The competition format will feature a 12-game qualification phase on Day 1, with the top eight teams advancing to a knockout playoff on Day 2. Matches can be decided by checkmate, resignation, or time forfeiture, while special rules prohibit immediate checkmates using transferred pieces and allow unique promotion mechanics involving pieces from a partner’s opposing board.

Adding prestige to the event, Philippine chess legend Eugene Torre, Asia’s first grandmaster, is expected to grace the tournament along with NCFP official and organizer Jayson Gonzales.

Registration is currently ongoing on a first-come, first-served basis, with organizers encouraging early sign-ups due to limited slots. To support international participation, accommodations near the venue will be provided for up to 40 foreign teams.
