The Philippines is preparing for a significant year in trade and investment as the country assumes the ASEAN chairmanship in 2026 to highlight business opportunities to regional partners.
Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque said the hosting role would allow trade ministers to engage directly with local business leaders and explore opportunities firsthand.
The ASEAN Trade Ministers’ Meeting is scheduled to take place in the Philippines from March 11 to 13, 2026. While deputy-level meetings are set for January, the March summit is designed to provide a platform for direct interaction between regional ministers and the Philippine business community.
Organizers originally planned to hold the event in Boracay, but moved the venue to Manila to ensure greater accessibility for businesses located in key economic hubs.
The DTI plans to prioritize sectors with high growth potential such as renewable energy, minerals, semiconductors, the creative economy, women-led enterprises and the development of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
The strategy also emphasizes digitalization and artificial intelligence.
Roque said the government intends to conduct major business matching sessions so regional partners can fully observe the Philippine economic landscape and investment setup.
The department is also preparing for initiatives like the ASEAN-Canada trade partnership, with formal negotiations expected to proceed following discussions between the two heads of state last year. Although specific targets remain under definition, officials anticipate concrete outcomes as these talks progress.
The 2026 chairmanship represents a shift toward in-person engagement, moving away from virtual meetings or discussions limited to deputies.
Roque noted that this is a chance for regional partners to see the country’s best practices and specific sector opportunities directly.
