President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has created three new special economic zones across Metro Manila, Northern Mindanao, and Calabarzon, a move aimed at expanding investment hubs for information technology, agro-industrial, and industrial activities.
In proclamations signed on December 16, the President designated an information technology center in Parañaque, an agro-industrial economic zone in Misamis Oriental, and a special economic zone in Calamba, Laguna, upon the recommendation of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Board of Directors.
Under the Proclamation No. 1111, Mr. Marcos declared a 10,000-square-meter property at Aseana City, Parañaque, as a special economic zone for information technology operations. The area was certified by the Land Registration Authority.
In Proclamation No. 1112, the President designated several parcels of land along National Road, in Barangays Cabug and Maanas, Medina, Misamis Oriental, as an agro-industrial economic zone, covering approximately 50,000 square meters.
He also issued Proclamation No. 1113, creating a special economic zone spanning about 100,000 square meters in Barangays Bubuyan and Punta, Calamba, Laguna.
All three ecozones will operate under Republic Act 7916, or the Special Economic Zone Act of 1995, as amended by Republic Act 8748, and will be subject to PEZA’s implementing rules and regulations governing the establishment, operation, and oversight of economic zones.
