Palace says gov’t to pursue PrimeWater liabilities amid takeover

Malacañang on Wednesday said the government will continue to pursue any lapses or liabilities of PrimeWater Infrastructure Corp., even as reports circulate that businessman Lucio Co’s group is eyeing a takeover of the water utility firm.

According to Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro, the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) has been reporting developments to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

“What lapses or liabilities PrimeWater, as management, has had should be held accountable,” Castro said, noting that the government’s actions will be guided by evidence presented in LWUA reports.

She added that the LWUA is moving to protect consumers affected by service disruptions.

Citing LWUA official Joyce Salonga, Castro said the agency is set to issue a memorandum circular this month that would prohibit the disconnection of water service to concessionaires.

The PCO official also said that consumers should not be billed for water services that were not delivered, as affected customers should await the issuance of the LWUA circular for specific guidelines.

PrimeWater, which operates water districts nationwide, has faced complaints over service quality and billing, prompting calls for stricter oversight as discussions of a possible change in ownership emerge.
