The Office of the Ombudsman clarified that the fear being felt by private contractor Sarah Discaya is brought about by her personal actions.
In a message to reporters on Thursday, Assistant Ombudsman Mico Clavano explained that “fear cannot be used as an excuse to avoid responsibility.”
“It is clear: Ms. Discaya’s fear today is the result of actions she herself took. I wish she had thought about the future of millions of Filipinos who were put at risk when funds were diverted for projects that were supposed to protect them from flooding,” he said in Filipino.
Clavano made this remark after Sarah shared in an interview that she feels afraid after turning herself in to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) ahead of a looming arrest warrant.
While she has the right to due process, he stressed that “the consequences are here because the choices were hers.”
Earlier this week, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that an arrest warrant would be issued against the private contractor within the week.
