Dizon inspects Siargao infra projects, expresses dismay

Public Works and Highways Secretary Vince Dizon on Wednesday conducted an inspection of key infrastructure projects on Siargao Island, in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to assess the condition of public works nationwide and hasten the completion of delayed government projects.

Dizon expressed dismay after finding that the Maasin and Asinan bridges in Pilar town—both initiated in 2021 and reportedly declared completed in 2022—remain unfinished.

He also flagged significant discrepancies in the flood control project in Barangay Tuburan, Del Carmen, which was reported at 95 percent complete, but was found to be only about 35 percent accomplished.

The DPWH chief ordered the immediate acceleration of work on the stalled projects and announced that a formal investigation is underway to determine the causes of the prolonged delays.

Dizon said the inquiry will include a review of the performance and accountability of the contractor involved, amid allegations linking the firm to Surigao del Norte 1st District Rep. Francisco “Bingo” Matugas.

He said that the department will evaluate all parties associated with the projects to ensure transparency, responsibility, and compliance with government standards.

“We will not allow any project to be declared complete if it remains unusable or unfinished. Those responsible will be held accountable,” Dizon said.
