The Perpetual Help Altas punched their ticket to the NCAA Season 101 men’s basketball semifinals on Thursday afternoon, defeating the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 81-74, in the quarterfinals at Mall of Asia Arena.
As the top seed of Group A, the Altas (now 10-4) utilized their twice-to-beat advantage to eliminate the Heavy Bombers and become the first team to enter the Final Four.
Altas guard Mark Gojo Cruz led the team with 23 points, adding two rebounds and two assists. Patrick Sleat delivered a stellar double-double performance with 14 points and 10 assists, along with six rebounds.
“Tina-try ko lang talaga to make the right read every time. Gusto kasi ni coach Olsen (Racela) for us to take the high percentage shots,” Sleat said about the Altas’ approach.
JRU, who finished the season with a 6-8 record, fought hard, led by Sean Salvador’s 18 points. Allen Laurenaria’s double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds was not enough to extend their Season 101 campaign.
Perpetual Help now awaits the victor of the upcoming rubber match between Arellano and Letran. However, Sleat emphasized the need for continued improvement before the semifinals.
“Whatever we’re doing, it’s not enough. We have to add more to our games and put in the extra effort. We also have to grow, not just as individuals but as a team.”
