The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has assured the public that there will be no road works and diggings in Metro Manila to provide relief to commuters and motorists during the Christmas season, when traffic is expected to be heavy.
This development comes as the agency began implementing a temporary suspension as part of its traffic mitigation measures for the holidays. The ban on road works and diggings will be in effect until December 25, covering all road reblocking works, pipe-laying, road upgrading, and other excavation activities that may hinder or disrupt the smooth flow of traffic.
The only exceptions to the rule apply to the government’s flagship projects.
Shopping mall owners and operators in Metro Manila have also adjusted their operating hours. Malls will open at 11 a.m. and will remain operational until closing time at 11 p.m.
There are 131 malls in the National Capital Region, 29 of which are located along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA).
Deliveries for mall operators will only be allowed at night, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following day, except for perishable goods such as food and ice.
The MMDA said shopping malls and commercial centers significantly contribute to heavy traffic on Metro Manila’s main roads, especially during the “ber months,” as the holidays approach. The agency expects at least a 20-percent surge in traffic from September through December due largely to increased activity at these establishments.
“The Christmas season brings with it a 10 to 25 percent increase in vehicular volume on Metro Manila roads. By implementing these effective measures, we aim to provide a more manageable traffic flow for the holidays,” MMDA chairman Romando Artes said.
