The Senate on Thursday flew the Philippine flag at half-mast to mourn the death of former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile.
Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III informed the upper chamber of his predecessor’s passing amid plenary deliberations of the P6.792-trillion 2026 General Appropriations Bill.
In line with tradition, the Senate suspended its plenary session to honor the former Senate chief.
“He has dedicated his whole life, even until his last days, to public service. We will remember him for his formidable intellect and compassion to the people,” Sotto said of Enrile.
“As we mourn his passing, we find comfort in knowing that the legacy of Manong Johnny will always live on, etched within the walls of this institution that he loved,” he added.
Enrile served the Senate for three terms, being elected as the 21st Senate President of the Philippines from 2008 to 2013.
