Roberto Martin Sing debuts with serene ‘Cool Waters’ show

Artist and educator Roberto Martin Sing opened his first solo exhibition, Cool Waters, debuting as an artist with a series that centers on art as a source of contemplative solace.

Sing, who spent his professional life teaching in Metro Manila, turns to the recurring image of a freshwater stream as a form of escape from the demands of city life. The exhibition moves away from provocation, instead presenting works designed to evoke peace, healing, and emotional refuge.

The artist describes the series as aligned with the spirit of aestheticism, shifting its focus from sensory impact to tranquility. The works recall the contemplative value of art explored by thinkers such as Arthur Schopenhauer, who viewed aesthetic experience as a reprieve from human struggle.

Cool Waters also serves as a decade-long record of Sing’s academic discipline. The paintings reflect his study of Old Masters’ techniques, building on traditional foundations while exploring evolving methods as he continues to refine his craft.

The exhibition serves a threefold purpose: to honor the history of painting, to provide emotional solace to viewers, and to fulfill what Sing sees as a personal commitment to artistic growth.

An artist’s reception was held Oct. 18. The show ran through Oct. 25 at the Studio of Gateway Gallery.

Gateway Gallery, the art museum of Araneta City, is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with free admission. It is on the fifth floor of Gateway Tower in Araneta City. For inquiries, contact gatewaygallery@aranetagroup.com or +63 2 825 3012.
