Seasoned host Boy Abunda reminded aspiring performers that success in show business takes more than talent — it requires heart, hunger, and a clear sense of identity.
During the “Ask Boy Abunda” segment of CIA with BA, Hong Kong-based performer Athena Alba asked the King of Talk what it takes to win the hearts of the public.
“Kahit hindi sa masa, kahit ‘pag nasa entablado ka lang, importante na alam nilang gustong-gusto mo ‘yung ginagawa mo,” Abunda said, emphasizing the importance of genuine passion on stage.
“I like artists who are hungry,” he added. “Gusto ko ‘pag kumakanta sila ng awitin, parang it’s the last song they’re going to sing in life. Bawat hinga, bawat tingin, bawat note ay ninanamnam.”
Abunda said artists must pair passion and hunger with hard work to earn the audience’s love. When asked how performers can discover their true calling, he encouraged them to explore and experiment with different styles.
“You go to as many genres as possible… don’t be afraid to go on an adventure, looking for your musical identity,” he advised, recalling his experience managing singers who found their voice through exploration.
On how to stand out in a crowded industry, Abunda said individuality is key. “You have to discover that: ‘What makes me different?’ It can be physical, it can be in the music, it can be in the style, so kailangang meron kang identifying mark.”
He thanked Alba for her thoughtful questions, saying they reflect the journey of many aspiring artists. For Abunda, true success comes not just from talent, but from hunger, heart, and relentless effort.
CIA with BA, hosted by Senator Alan Cayetano, Senator Pia Cayetano, and Boy Abunda, airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on GMA 7, with replays Saturdays at 10:30 p.m. on GTV.
