US extends $1-M emergency disaster aid to Philippines

The United States pledged $1 million to help the Philippine government in its ongoing relief efforts for communities affected by Typhoon “Tino” (international name: Kalmaegi) and the recent powerful earthquakes in the country’s southern portion.

According to Washington, the assistance will include emergency shelter, logistics support, and access to safe water and sanitation for areas severely impacted by Tino.

“As millions of Filipinos face the challenges left by these disasters, including the loss of family and loved ones, our rapid response stands as a testament to the depth and resilience of our enduring ties, especially in times of crisis,” the US State Department said in a statement.

“To this end, the United States will provide $1 million in immediate life-saving assistance,” it added.

Across the southern Philippines, Tino left at least 188 people dead and 135 missing, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD). At least 139 died in Cebu alone, mostly due to flash floods.

“The United States is committed to supporting Philippine-led efforts, working together to save lives, alleviate suffering, and help communities recover from these disasters,” the US State Department said.

It added that US disaster assistance will remain closely coordinated with the Philippine government and local organizations, especially as the country braces for another potentially powerful tropical cyclone, “Uwan.”
