BIR files raps vs. Alcantara, 2 others over P1.6b tax liabilities

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Thursday filed tax evasion cases against former DPWH engineers Henry Alcantara, Brice Hernandez, and Jaypee Mendoza at the Department of Justice (DOJ).

In a press briefing, BIR Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui. Jr. said they found a clear case of tax evasion against the former DPWH officials.

“We conducted a lifestyle check on Alcantara, Hernandez, and Mendoza. These 3 ex-DPWH officials had lavish lifestyles. We discovered P1.6 billion in income tax deficiencies alone after investigating their financial transactions, properties, business interests, and tax returns of the aforementioned individuals,” he said.

Lumagui added that their SALNs cannot justify their lavish lifestyle, noting that their casino records, properties, financial transactions, and business interests are grossly disproportionate to their declared sources of income.

The former officials committed tax evasion and willful failure to file and supply accurate information in their income tax returns in violation of the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997.

The filing is the 2nd batch of criminal cases in relation to anomalous flood control cases and the 10th criminal case, totaling P8,860,269,333.36 tax liabilities.

Last month, the BIR also filed charges against contractors Sarah Discaya, Curlee Discaya, and their corporate officer in relation to P7,182,172,532.25 total tax liabilities of St. Gerrard Construction.
