DPWH taps PhilSA for monitoring infrastructure projects

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has partnered with the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) to strengthen the monitoring of infrastructure projects through the use of space technology.

On Monday, the two agencies signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that allows the use of satellite imagery and other space-based tools to track the progress and validate the implementation of DPWH projects nationwide.

Under the agreement, PhilSA will provide technical support and access to satellite data, while the DPWH will utilize the information to improve transparency, planning, and evaluation of its infrastructure initiatives.

DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon stated the collaboration will help ensure that government projects are properly implemented and that funds are used efficiently.

“This partnership will allow us to monitor projects remotely and identify problems early. It will also strengthen accountability in our infrastructure programs,” the DPWH chief said.

The agreement comes as the DPWH faces investigations over alleged irregularities in several flood control projects.

Officials said the use of satellite technology could help detect discrepancies between reported and actual construction activities on the ground.

PhilSA Officer-in-Charge Gay Jane Perez expressed confidence that the partnership would demonstrate the value of space technology in supporting good governance and sustainable development.

“This is an example of how space data can make a real difference in public service,” the PhilSA chief said.

The DPWH and PhilSA are expected to begin pilot monitoring of selected projects before expanding the program nationwide.
