NDRRMC updates Cebu quake death toll to 76

The death toll from the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Bogo City, Cebu on September 30 has climbed to 76, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Thursday.

According to its latest situation report, 559 individuals were injured, while 748,025 people—or 216,962 families—across Central Visayas were affected by the tremor.

Of these, 4,818 people (1,236 families) are staying in evacuation centers, while 16,798 people (4,199 families) are temporarily sheltering in other locations.

Authorities said the quake damaged 134,227 houses, including 126,932 partially damaged and 7,295 totally destroyed. Infrastructure losses reached ₱6.76 million, affecting 959 structures.

Four of eight damaged road sections and 10 of 21 affected bridges remain impassable. Two of three seaports are still non-operational.

Power outages persist in 48 of the 91 affected areas, while one area continues to experience water supply problems. Communication issues were also reported in 10 of 17 affected areas.

Classes remain suspended in 116 areas, while work in 30 localities has also been halted due to safety concerns.

The entire province of Cebu has been placed under a state of calamity.

The NDRRMC said that ₱401.32 million worth of assistance has been distributed to affected residents.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded more than 12,000 aftershocks as of Tuesday following the September 30 quake.
