Maris Racal joins San Diego Filipino Film Festival with Sunshine

Directed by Antoinette Jadaone, Sunshine explores women’s rights and reproductive health—topics Racal believes deserve more open conversations among Filipinos.

“Up until now I still feel very grateful that I get to be Sunshine,” she said before her departure. “The story holds a very important message especially for young women.”

Racal shared that the film has sparked meaningful discussions among audiences.

“Topic siya na iniiwasan dati at usually nangyayari lang sa tahimik lang. And I’m glad that a lot more Filipinos and women and Gen Zs are very open to talk about it, bravely, na hindi na natatakot,” she said.

The Can’t Buy Me Love star also expressed her hope that Sunshine will be screened in schools to reach more Filipino youth.

“Mas lumawak pa ang reach ng Sunshine hindi lang internationally… mas marami pang mga teenager sana mapalabas siya sa school,” she said.

Racal added that she’s looking forward to meeting Filipino fans and filmmakers abroad as the film continues to shed light on timely and relevant social issues.
