PCG monitors grounded fishing vessel in Occidental Mindoro

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is closely monitoring Filipino fishing vessel FV Jishun 2, which ran aground due to bad weather approximately 10 meters from the shoreline of Sitio Pamustusin in Barangay Harrison, Paluan, Occidental Mindoro on September 27.

Personnel from Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Paluan responded to the vessel and assessed the situation while conducting a routine coastal security patrol on Saturday. Coordination was made with the vessel’s master to determine the circumstances leading to the incident.

According to their report, FV Jishun 2 departed Barangay Tayamaan, Mamburao on Tuesday, September 23, to seek shelter at Sitio Pamustusin. On Friday afternoon, September 26, the vessel attempted to maneuver amid strong waves and heavy rainfall, which caused poor visibility.

During the maneuver, the anchor line git entangled with the propeller, resulting in loss of control and eventual grounding on a sandy seabed at about 4:32 p.m. Upon inspection, CGSS Paluan confirmed that no oil spill occurred and all crew members are in good physical condition.

The Coast Guard advised the ship’s master to notify the vessel owner to request towing assistance and file a marine protest in accordance with maritime procedures.

A cursory Google search yielded results tracing the owner of FV Jishun 2 to Kaohsiung, Taiwan. But the PCG said this is not a foreign vessel.

An updated list of accredited fishing vessels released by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) as of March 31, 2025, however, had zero results for FV Jishun 2.

The PCG assures the public that close monitoring, environmental inspections, and safety measures are being undertaken to prevent any potential hazards while awaiting proper marine services for the safe extraction of the vessel.

Occidental Mindoro is one of the provinces in the Mimaropa region impacted by Typhoon ‘Opong,’ which hit the Philippines earlier this week.

Editor’s Note: Previous edition of this story misidentified FV Jishun 2 as a Taiwanese fishing vessel. This information has been corrected as the Philippine Coast Guard clarified it is not a foreign vessel. There is, however, no FV Jishun 2 in the updated list of BFAR accredited fishing vessels.
