The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is taking another step forward in raising the standards of the game at home after key officials returned from the AFC Professional Football Seminar 2025 with fresh insights and strategies to drive local football forward.
PFF Head of Competitions Ritchie Gannaban and Club Licensing First Instance Body Chair Atty. Rene S. Grapilon joined more than a hundred football administrators from across Asia during the three-day seminar held on August 26–28 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The event gathered some of the region’s sharpest football minds to tackle the future of professional club football, the evolution of AFC competitions, and the continuous professionalization of the sport.
PFF President John Anthony Gutierrez praised the significance of the event, saying the knowledge and case studies presented by Asia’s most progressive leagues would play a vital role in strengthening Philippine football.
“The AFC Professional Football Seminar 2025 provided PFF with invaluable insights into the latest standards, strategies, and innovations shaping the professional game across Asia,” Gutierrez said. “The lessons shared will help us refine our domestic competitions, strengthen our club licensing framework, and ultimately drive the federation’s professional growth.”
For Gannaban, the seminar was a timely opportunity to reimagine Philippine football’s future—from league structures to pathways for men’s and women’s players.
“This means strengthening our league structure, enhancing the professional environment for our clubs, and creating clearer pathways for both men’s and women’s football,” Gannaban explained. “It also reinforces our commitment to aligning with AFC’s vision of excellence and ensuring our players, coaches, and clubs remain competitive at the continental level.”
Atty. Grapilon, meanwhile, highlighted the legal and governance takeaways that will further boost the federation’s compliance and capacity-building efforts.
“The seminar was a timely opportunity to deepen our understanding of the legal and regulatory frameworks that underpin professional club licensing,” Grapilon said. “Strengthening our compliance with AFC standards is crucial to ensure our domestic leagues operate with transparency, fairness, and sustainability. Robust club licensing is the foundation for long-term growth and credibility in Philippine football.”
Participants also drew inspiration from case studies of some of Asia’s most established leagues—including Japan’s J.League, the Qatar Stars League, the UAE Pro League, and the Cambodia Premier League—which shared practical lessons on governance, commercial growth, and player welfare.
A special emphasis was also placed on women’s football development, a priority that resonates strongly with the PFF as it continues to build on the success of the Philippine women’s national team on the world stage.
Beyond the technical knowledge, the PFF emphasized that sending its officials to global learning platforms like this is a clear investment in people.
“The development of football begins with the development of the people who manage it,” Gutierrez stressed. “By empowering our officials and staff with learning opportunities such as this seminar, we can build stronger structures and deliver better football experiences for players, clubs, and fans.”
