Healing the heart through art and self-care

Instead of waiting in a clinic for test results, guests at Watsons’ #heARTworks event attended a guided workshop on using oil pastels in an art gallery.

The session, held at drybrush Gallery’s Mall of Asia branch on Sept. 18, combined art activities with free health checks to promote heart care.

Filipino visual artist Noli Española led the class, teaching participants how to draw a simple flower arrangement. The step-by-step lesson encouraged people to pause, focus on the activity, and take a break from their routines.

Research shows that activities such as painting or drawing can reduce stress, lower cortisol levels, and improve mood, supporting both mental and cardiovascular health.

As participants focused on their sketches, free blood pressure and glucose checks nearby reinforced the idea that caring for the heart means keeping both the mind and body in check.

The #heARTworks painting workshop is designed to highlight the link between creativity and heart health

“We live in a fast-moving world, and too often we forget to pause and check in on ourselves not only physically, but emotionally,” said Joweeh Liao, Watsons Philippines director for health business unit, finance, property, and store development.

“Through this act of creating art, we hope people can find a moment of calm, or even inner peace.”

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the Philippines, responsible for nearly 19 percent of total deaths in 2024 — that’s about 13 Filipinos every hour.

With stress and lifestyle habits among the biggest contributors, the program underscored how a creative outlet can ease stress while encouraging people to take small but meaningful steps toward self-care.

“This special activity is a testament to our commitment, not only to our customers but to every individual who values their wellness journey,” said Sharon Decapia, senior AVP for marketing, PR, and sustainability.

And that commitment extends to showing people that heart care does not have to feel clinical. It can also be reflective, expressive, and even enjoyable.
