The Department of National Defense (DND) on Friday dismissed as “preposterous” rumors circulating on the internet about a supposed coup plot against the national government.
In a statement, DND Spokesperson Assistant Secretary Arsenio Andolong said the allegations were “a desperate attempt to propagate falsehood and sow discord,” stressing that they only serve to create confusion and fuel adversarial narratives.
“The DND and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) remain faithful to the country, our Constitution, and our democratic institutions,” Andolong said, adding that the agency’s priority is to focus its resources on improving the lives of Filipinos, addressing external threats, and advancing national interests.
The defense department also called on the public to be vigilant against disinformation and malign influence from both local and foreign sources, warning that this could divide the nation.
“We continue to stand with the Filipino people in the pursuit of truth, justice, and good governance,” Andolong said.
Earlier, the AFP leadership dismissed the coup rumors, calling them “baseless and unfounded.”
“The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) rejects malicious narratives about supposed plans to unseat the President or launch destabilization efforts. These claims are baseless, unfounded, and far removed from reality,’’ AFP Public Affairs Office chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad said.
