OCD calls for vigilance ahead of  ‘Opong’

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) has urged the public to remain alert and take precautionary measures as Severe Tropical Storm Opong (international name: Bualoi) moves closer to the country.

“We are again facing a new weather disturbance. Severe Tropical Storm Opong is bringing heavy rainfall and enhancing the southwest monsoon. These rains are continuous and may cause renewed flooding and landslides, especially in areas that are already saturated. Other hazards may also occur,” OCD administrator Undersecretary Harold Cabreros said in a statement Wednesday night.

“Again, we ask everyone to heed warnings and advisories from authorities, remain alert, and ensure household safety measures are in place,” he added.

Cabreros also stressed that the government continues to implement emergency measures and coordinate response operations.

Based on current forecasts, Opong is expected to make landfall over the Bicol Region by Friday afternoon, September 26, and traverse Southern Luzon until Saturday morning.

It may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Saturday evening or Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, the state weather bureau  said the storm may intensify into a typhoon before landfall.

PAGASA also warns that heavy rainfall, strong winds, and storm surges may impact areas outside the direct landfall zone.
