Mary Mediatrix Medical Center’s expansion set to transform healthcare

Mary Mediatrix Medical Center (Mediatrix) recently inaugurated its new expansion building, representing a significant ₱500 million investment in the health and wellness of the people of Southern Luzon. This monumental project is a tangible sign of the hospital’s unwavering commitment to providing quality, world-class medical services and creating new opportunities for the local community.

The new facility is a direct response to a pressing healthcare need in the region. According to hospital data, CALABARZON, where Batangas is located, is second only to Manila in the number of heart attack cases. To combat this alarming statistic and help lower the area’s mortality rate, Mediatrix recently added its second catheterization (cath) lab machine, making it the only hospital in the region to have two.

The ₱500 million investment covers both the new building and brand-new, state-of-the-art medical equipment that adheres to international standards. Beyond its impact on the health status of the community, the expansion also brings significant economic benefits to Batangas. To support this growth, Mediatrix is actively hiring 120 new nurses, a crucial boost for local employment.

“This investment is a strategic move by Mary Mediatrix Medical Center & Mount Grace Hospitals to increase capacity and reinforce its top standing in healthcare in Southern Luzon,” said Jose Ronaldo H. De Los Santos, President and CEO of Mary Mediatrix Medical Center. Mount Grace Hospitals is one of the country’s largest hospital networks with 25 partners nationwide.

“Mary Mediatrix Medical Center has always been a key part of our network, and this expansion solidifies our commitment to providing accessible, top-tier medical services to the people of Batangas and the surrounding region.”

The new building was designed and constructed to meet rigorous international standards, ensuring the highest level of patient safety and care. Its adaptable design also allows it to serve as a self-contained isolation unit, a proactive measure that ensures the hospital is equipped to handle future public health needs while offering a wide range of advanced services and amenities to enhance patient care and comfort.

This includes an urgent care facility, which is the first phase of a larger expansion plan for the hospital’s Emergency Department capability. The building also features 40 new patient rooms that are both spacious and modern, a new Wellness Center designed for VIP and demanding patients offering a dedicated lounge area with food and drinks, and an 8-bed Neurological Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU), which is part of the hospital’s new Neuroscience Center or “Brain Institute”.

With this expansion, Mary Mediatrix Medical Center is on track to become the largest private hospital in Southern Luzon. The hospital is applying for a 210-bed capacity with the goal of expanding to 240 beds by early next year and ultimately reaching 300 beds by the end of 2030. This significant investment is a testament to the hospital’s vision to be the referral center for the region.

The hospital has also partnered with other local healthcare units to ensure patients can be quickly referred for specialized cardiac procedures. In August, Mediatrix formally launched the Code HB – “Heart of Batangas” Program, an initiative to enhance the timely and efficient delivery of care to heart attack patients. The program, currently the only one of its kind in the Philippines, establishes strong partnerships with hospitals across Southern Luzon, training them to provide critical, life-saving interventions before patients are transferred to Mediatrix’s specialized facility.

“Our bias for quick action and response to our patients’ and communities’ needs shows that our patients are always at the center of every decision we make, even if it means a significant increase in resources,” said Allan Almazar, SVP for Operations. “This is what you can expect of Mary Mediatrix, and this is what we demand of ourselves.”

The hospital also plans to affiliate with 20 to 30 new doctors annually, including specialists in cardiology, oncology, endocrinology, pediatrics, gastroenterology, and surgery, as it moves toward adopting robotic medical procedures.
