Why Readers Keep Coming Back to the Manila International Book Fair

The Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) is not just a marketplace for discounted titles, it has become a yearly tradition for many Filipinos. Now on its 46th year, the country’s biggest and longest-running book fair continues to draw thousands of readers to the SMX Convention Center in Pasay.

For students, families, and lifelong book lovers, the event means more than tote bags filled with novels. It’s about the experience of being surrounded by stories, meeting authors, and discovering works that may not always be visible on bookstore shelves.

A girl with glasses who attended the fair for the second time, shared how MIBF left a strong impression on her. “It’s only my second year, so last year was my first one, very overwhelming and fun,” she said. What keeps her coming back are both the bargains and the excitement of new releases. “My priority is usually the backlist titles, so i just look for specially mga series, i look for the ones na wala pa ako but also yung mga new releases of local publisher.”

For long-time attendee Pam Zaragoza, who has been visiting the fair almost every year before the pandemic, the event has shaped her reading choices over time. So earlier MIBF years I’ve been getting mostly titles from fully book, western, asian titles but the more I’ve been going to MIBF I’ve been getting Filipino author books as well,” she explained. She also highlighted what makes the event special: “It’s great because we can get new titles, backlist titles, and even meet authors through book signings. That’s why I come back every year.”

This shift from focusing on imported titles to discovering Filipino voices shows how MIBF also serves as a platform for local publishers. New book launches timed with the fair give writers and independent publishers a chance to reach a wider audience. For readers like Pam, this is part of the excitement: “A lot of new books, specifically from local publishers, are being released during MIBF season, so that’s one thing we really look forward to.”

Beyond discounts, the book fair has become a cultural gathering where generations of readers find common ground. Whether it’s the thrill of chasing a rare title, the joy of completing a series, or the simple pleasure of meeting favorite authors, the MIBF remains a reminder that reading is very much alive in the Philippines.

As Pam and Pam Zaragosa show, the fair is more than a shopping trip, it’s an annual celebration of stories, and a community that welcomes everyone who loves them.
