“Cebu Goes Culinary 2025” will spotlight Balik Isla-themed Filipino dishes at the region’s premier culinary competition on September 26–27 at SM Seaside City Cebu. Organized by the Hotel Resort & Restaurant Association of Cebu, Inc. (HRRACI), the event is held in partnership with the National Food Showdown.
Organizers said the competition aims to elevate Filipino and Cebuano cuisine while positioning Cebu as a culinary and tourism destination. “Our goal is to elevate our cuisine and highlight our products to help the whole industry,” said Julita Urbina, HRRACI chairperson.
Chef Myrna Segismundo recalled how Filipino food once lacked recognition in culinary competitions. “At that time, people looked down on our food. We were not proud of it,” she said, adding that the lack of standards encouraged her to research heritage cuisine. Minerva Newman
Through the contest, HRRACI hopes to inspire chefs, students, and food professionals to embrace Filipino culinary heritage. “We want to elevate our cuisine, our heritage, and our traditions so that people will come here as a destination,” Urbina said.
