SC asked to suppress bogus complaints for extortion

The Supreme Court (SC) is being urged to act on prosecutors who entertain fake complaints to help extortionists squeeze money from victims.

On Tuesday, Monalie Dizon, secretary general of the Coalition Against Corruption (CAC) and the Kilusang Pagbabago National Movement for Change, submitted to the High Court information detailing an incident at the Olongapo City Prosecutor’s Office.

In a 5-page letter addressed to Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, legal counsel Baltazar Beltran appealed for the SC’s action, citing grave implications in the justice system.

“If such acts of falsification, manipulation, and concealment are allowed to pass without accountability, then the very pillars of justice collapse. The prosecutorial service, which is sworn to act with fairness and impartiality, must never be weaponized by individuals or syndicates seeking to fabricate charges for the purpose of harassment or extortion,” the letter reads.

Beltran is the counsel for Lacsina Ann Sinlao and her daughter, who are both from the Aeta tribe in Morong, Bataan.

They were allegedly used by a Subic-based “syndicate” as bogus complainants against the businessman whom the group reportedly targeted for blackmail amounting to P50 million.
