Discaya firm rapped for not meeting deadline

Malacañang yesterday exposed the unfinished construction of the Philippine Film Heritage building in Intramuros, Manila, and raised the possible filing of a case against its contractor.

“If they don’t have a valid reason why they didn’t turn it over correctly and according to the contract, they can be sued, first of all, civil liability, there is that,” Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro told reporters.

She said that yesterday, Sept. 4, was the target completion date of the project.

Castro led Palace reporters through the site, pointing out deficiencies such as exposed piping, misplaced downspouts, bare floors, incomplete elevator finishes, lack of roof waterproofing, and an unfinished cinematheque.

The project, costing P107.9 million, was awarded to Great Pacific Builders and Gen Contractor Inc., one of the companies owned by the Discaya family.

“Disappointing. And this building, its contractor is (Great Pacific Builders and General Contractor Inc.), it is one of the corporations of the Discayas.” she said.

Several companies of the. Discayas are among the top 15 contractors who were awarded billions of pesos worth of flood control contracts that are now under investigation by the government.
