Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez vowed to continue the work of former Secretary Vince Dizon by prioritizing the welfare of Filipino commuters.
Lopez said that his focus will remain on addressing transportation issues and following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to create a commuter-centric transport system.
“When Sec. Vince and I were in the rotation, we saw the hardships of commuters so we must prioritize their interests and welfare,” Lopez said.
“If we really want to solve and address the problems of commuters, we have to go out because the work is on the road,” he added.
Lopez emphasized that it is also important to continue accountability on the road to ensure the safety of commuters, pedestrians, and motorists.
“We need to hold reckless motorists and drivers accountable on the road. We will not stop it,” said the new transport chief.
Lopez also thanked former Secretary Vince Dizon for pushing for a comprehensive overhaul of the transport system and the acceleration of major projects that will benefit commuters.
Dizon, on the other hand, is confident that Lopez will be able to take on the task of overhauling the country’s transport system.
“When the President asked me for a name, I only gave one: I only gave Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez,” Dizon said.
“The President trusts you. The cabinet trusts you. The DOTr trusts you and I’m sure the people will trust you,” he added.
Lopez took his oath before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday, September 1, 2025.
A lawyer by profession and a certified public accountant, Lopez has been in the DOTr since 2017 and rose from the ranks as the agency’s Director for Legal Service.
He also held key positions including Assistant Secretary for Procurement and Assistant Secretary for Project Implementation, and eventually as Chief of Staff of former Transportation Secretary Art Tugade.
In November 2022, Lopez was also named Executive Director of the Land Transportation Office.
Before he was appointed acting Secretary of the DOTr, Lopez served as Senior Undersecretary for former Transportation and now Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon, where he handled the agency’s administration, finance and procurement matters.
A native of Cagayan, Secretary Lopez finished BS Accountancy as Cum Laude at St. Paul University in Tugegarao City and Bachelor of Laws at the San Beda University, Manila. Darwin G. Amojelar
