Remulla: Ombudsman’s office not a political tool

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla assured on Tuesday that the Office of the Ombudsman will not be used as a “political weapon” if he is appointed to lead the agency.

He made this remark during the last day of the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) public panel interviews.

“It should not be a tool for political battles… If there is no evidence, we have to dismiss these cases… Politics is temporary; the more important thing is national interest,” he said.

He underscored that too much politics is going on, noting there are many cases filed against partisan politics.

Remulla explained that his track record as a lawyer, legislator, and governor speaks of his independence, a trait that is important for the position.

Meanwhile, he revealed that he will file a motion to resolve the pending complaints filed against him by Senator Imee Marcos regarding the arrest and transfer of former President Rodrigo Duterte to the International Criminal Court.

He defended the arrest and transfer of Duterte to The Hague, which he said was done to maintain the stability of the country and prevent any violence or undesirable events.
