Department of Health (DOH) spokesperson Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo urged communities to take extra precautions and seek early medical care if symptoms occur.
One of the most pressing concerns is dengue fever, which remains the most common illness during this period. Rainwater left in open containers or puddles becomes breeding spots for mosquitoes that spread the virus. Hospitals have already reported rising dengue cases, prompting local governments to intensify clean-up drives and disinfection efforts.
Moreover, leptospirosis is another serious concern. The bacterial infection spreads through floodwater contaminated with rat urine. Even small cuts on the skin can allow infection, leading to fever, body pain, or kidney problems. Other water-borne diseases such as diarrhea and cholera also increase during the rainy months due to unsafe drinking water and poor sanitation. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of boiling water, practicing proper handwashing, and following safe food handling practices.
