The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday warned the public about the heightened risk of leptospirosis as heavy rains and flooding persist in many areas due to Tropical Depression “Isang” and the southwest monsoon.
“As the rains intensify again and there is a threat of flooding, avoid floodwaters as much as possible. Floodwater is dirty and is a source of leptospirosis,” DOH spokesperson Albert Domingo said.
The health official urged residents to avoid wading through floodwaters, especially if they have open wounds or cuts that could allow bacteria to enter the body.
He said leptospirosis can cause fever, muscle pain, diarrhea, and eye redness, and the disease can become severe if untreated.
“Remember, no flood means no leptospirosis. Let us prevent it together,” Domingo said.
