PSA tapping space-enabled tools for statistical data collection

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) have partnered to use satellite technology to improve data collection and support evidence-based policymaking in the Philippines.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) have signed an agreement to integrate space-enabled tools into the country’s statistical data systems, the agencies said in a joint statement on Monday.

The partnership aims to strengthen evidence-based policymaking by utilizing satellite technology for improved data collection and analysis.

PhilSA deputy director-general Denis Villorente said the use of satellite technology would help improve crop monitoring, yield estimation and data collection, which are crucial for planning and policymaking decisions affecting farmers and fisherfolks.

“This partnership is expected to deliver long-term benefits, such as technical cooperation, knowledge and data exchange, capacity building, and system development and roadmap planning,” the PSA said in a statement.

Deputy National Statistician Divina Gracia del Prado of the PSA said that using satellite data and remote sensing would improve data collection accuracy, reduce reliance on fieldwork, and expand reach to remote areas.

“The agency’s involvement in the partnership demonstrates a deeper commitment to leveraging shared expertise, ushering in a new era of statistics empowered by space-based technology, and ultimately contributing to more responsive and data-informed governance for the Filipino people,” the PSA said.
