Telehealth platform KonsultaMD has partnered with Southstar Drug and Faberco Life Sciences to roll out HIV self-test kits in the Philippines, aiming to make testing more accessible, discreet, and stigma-free.
In a ceremonial signing held on Aug. 6, the initiative aims to encourage early detection and prevention by combining e-commerce, pharmacy access, and telehealth.
“This is a real and growing crisis. Healthcare must meet people where they are—with empathy, with dignity, and with urgency. We are making prevention and support more accessible, more compassionate, and more personal than ever,” said Rina Tadiar, head of consumer at Metro Pacific Health Tech, which operates KonsultaMD.
Under the partnership, users can purchase FDA-approved Mylan HIV self-test kits through the KonsultaMD app’s Pharmacy section. Customers can choose to have the kits delivered in discreet packaging or pick them up at selected Southstar Drug branches.
“The whole process can be done privately and conveniently. Even the packaging is discreet, because we understand the fear of being judged,” Tadiar added.
The collaboration also integrates medical guidance into the process. Teleconsultations with KonsultaMD doctors trained in HIV 101 and motivational counseling are available for individuals who take the test. The goal is to ensure proper guidance and to connect users to further care if needed, including preventive options such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
Faberco Life Sciences, which holds the license for the Mylan HIV self-test kit in the Philippines, highlighted the importance of self-testing in breaking down barriers.
“Self-testing empowers individuals to take charge of their health without fear of discrimination. It’s about giving people choices and control,” Faberco managing director Ashley Ng shared.
Southstar Drug, one of the country’s largest pharmacy chains, will serve as a key distribution partner. General manager Thaddeus L. Sanchez said making the kits available through both online and in-store channels can help normalize HIV testing.
“For many, going to a clinic for an HIV test is intimidating. Having the option to order online or pick up in-store encourages early action and helps normalize testing,” Sanchez stated.
Dr. Carlo Carrillo, medical information director at KonsultaMD, stressed that fear and stigma remain among the biggest hurdles to HIV prevention.
“Knowing your HIV status is a powerful step in taking control of your health. With teleconsultations built into the service, we ensure that people have access to proper guidance and care—no judgment, just support,” Carrillo explained.
The Department of Health (DOH) has reported a steady rise in new HIV cases in recent years, with young Filipinos among the most affected. While traditional clinic-based testing remains essential, advocates say self-testing can complement existing services by reaching individuals who might otherwise avoid testing altogether.
“This is just the start. Our goal is to create a seamless, end-to-end healthcare pathway—from awareness and early detection to consultation, treatment, and ongoing support—so no one feels alone in this journey,” Tadiar added.
By leveraging KonsultaMD’s telehealth platform, Southstar Drug’s retail reach, and Faberco’s product expertise, the partnership hopes to reduce barriers to testing and foster a culture where HIV awareness and prevention are part of regular healthcare practices.
