Manila Water building new quake-proof San Juan Reservoir

Manila Water Company said it is constructing a new P932 million reservoir to withstand a 7.2-magnitude earthquake and boost water supply reliability for the cities of Quezon City, San Juan and Mandaluyong.

The new San Juan Reservoir, located along N. Domingo Street, will replace a facility built in 1968 and store up to 56 million liters of water. The project, which was 26.90-percent complete as of July 2025, is expected to be finished by the third quarter of 2026.

It incorporates modern engineering standards, including upgraded electrical, instrumentation, mechanical and site development systems. Its robust design reflects Manila Water’s commitment to building resilient infrastructure that can support the region’s increasing demand for clean and reliable water, the company said in a statement.

“The San Juan Reservoir is more than just a new facility. It’s a forward-looking investment in resilience and reliability. As our cities continue to grow, we must ensure that our infrastructure keeps pace. This project reflects Manila Water’s commitment to safeguarding water supply for our communities, even in the face of natural disasters like major earthquakes,” said Manila Water communication affairs group director Jeric Sevilla.

The company has installed acoustic barriers to minimize noise for nearby communities during construction. The project is part of Manila Water’s broader effort to expand and secure water infrastructure for the East Zone of Metro Manila.

Upcoming construction milestones include continuous excavation and lean concreting, rebar fabrication for Phase 1 Mat Foundation and installation of Mat Foundation Rebar

Manila Water said to minimize disruption to nearby communities, acoustic barriers were installed to reduce noise and other construction-related disturbances.

The company said the reservoir is a strategic investment in long-term water security and disaster preparedness.

The San Juan Reservoir will play a critical role in Manila Water’s broader efforts to expand and safeguard water supply infrastructure across the East Zone, it said.
