The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Department of Tourism (DOT) broke ground on a new passenger terminal for Siargao Airport Friday to improve the travel experience for visitors to the popular surfing destination.
DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco and DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon launched the construction of the expanded Siargao Airport in Barangay Sayak, Del Carmen, Surigao Del Norte.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed the two departments to improve the island’s infrastructure to support its growing tourism and trade, which he said will create more jobs and business opportunities for locals.
Dizon said the new terminal would “elevate Siargao’s status as a premier gateway” to the country’s surfing capital. He noted that the current terminal is often overcrowded and that the project’s main goal is to improve passenger comfort.
The new terminal is expected to be finished in eight months and will increase the airport’s capacity from 200 passengers to at least 750 daily.
The Siargao Airport project is part of a larger modernization and expansion plan for Davao and Bicol Airports, submitted by the JG Summit and Filinvest Groups under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) deal.
