SENATE President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada on Friday revealed that at least 19 senators agree there is no need to question the Supreme Court’s decision although the Senate is expected to vote on August 6 regarding its next steps following the ruling.
\He confirmed that he will not sign the draft resolution circulated by Senator Francis Pangilinan, which urges
the Supreme Court to revisit its decision on the impeachment case.
“It is already executory, so we have to abide by the ruling of the Supreme Court,” Estrada noted, adding that no matter how well the resolution is explained, the Senate is still bound to obey the High Court’s decision.
“If we will not abide by the ruling of the SC, we are going to flirt with a constitutional crisis. And if there’s a constitutional crisis, what will happen next? There will be chaos in the government,” he said.
Estrada said Pangilinan’s draft resolution has so far gained the signatures of Senators Risa Hontiveros, Bam Aquino, Tito Sotto, and Pangilinan himself.
He added that if the House of Representatives files a motion for reconsideration and succeeds in reversing the ruling, only then will the Senate reconsider its position on the matter.
