Manila City Mayor Francisco Moreno Domagoso expressed support for President Marcos’ stance against corrupt officials behind the failed flood control projects.
In his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), the President vowed that those responsible for collapsed, ineffective, or non-existent flood control projects will be held accountable.
“So that’s what—let’s call it spade a spade—the pumping station that was built didn’t work. I think someone is accountable to the President. Someone should be accountable to the President. Whether they’re congressmen or whoever they are, the President should hold them accountable because the President has already spoken,” said Domagoso.
He made this remark after the capital city faced serious flooding problems amid a series of storms.
Domagoso appealed to national government agencies (NGAs) to fix non-operational pumping stations that resulted in worsened flooding in the city.
“We hope this finally gets the attention it deserves. We’ve done the declogging, we’ve held the line, but we need working infrastructure to keep people safe,” he noted.
While MMDA-managed pumping stations are functioning, he explained that several new ones built by the DPWH have not been turned over or made operational, undermining flood mitigation efforts.
Last week, the Manila mayor called on the national government to invest in long-term solutions such as more sewage treatment plants (STPs) across flood-prone districts.
