Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III said he is ready and eager to go on his much-ballyhooed boxing match with Davao City acting Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, but admitted that youth and stamina might not be on his side and would not last 12 rounds.
The 37-year old Duterte, however, laid down a condition for the fight to happen.
In a video posted online, he demanded that all elected officials including the President should undergo a hair follicle drug test.
Nevertheless, the 50-year-old Torre indicated that all is set for the fight, likely to be staged on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
“The Rizal Memorial Coliseum is actually already set. A ring is already being set up there for Sunday,” the PNP chief said during a break in his practice at the PNP gym on Thursday.
“Now if he’s (Duterte) not there, we will just continue with our activity of giving ayuda to our kababayan,” Torre declared.
The police chief promises that the bout would be entertaining for the entire Filipino citizenry.
“I am ready. When I was still a plebe (at the Philippine National Police Academy), I experienced being punched while my hands were tied behind my back. So I am just thinking about it as part of the preparation… There was a challenge made, and I just saw this as an opportunity to raise funds and help our kababayan,” he added.
The PNP chief said earlier he was looking at raising some funds for charitable endeavors in light of the heavy rains and flash floods over the past days.
A social media post inquired if the Torre-Duterte clash would be on a pay-per-view basis, but there had been no words toward that direction. With Cherrie Villahermosa
