NU, Gilas Girls standout Ashlyn Abong passes away

Gilas Pilipinas Girls standout and National University Lady Bullpup, Ashlyn Abong passed away on Friday.

Abong, 18, collapsed while training at National University with her teammates, according to school officials.

Gilas Women program director Patrick Aquino, said the school’s medical team immediately attempted to revive Abong and rushed her to the hospital.

Abong has been a fixture in the Gilas Girls program, and played in last year’s FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup Division B.

Playing center for the NU Lady Bullpups, the 5’11” saw action in season 87 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines  cagefest.

In her last playing year with the team, Abong normed 11.63 points, 10.38 rebounds, and 1.63 assists per game.

Her passing is a heartbreaking loss to Philippine women’s basketball.

“Rest well, Ashlyn. We will miss you. My sincere condolences to the family,” said  Aquino on his social media post.
